Following the demise of Bean na hEireann in 1911, leaving a gap in the market for a feminist newspaper, Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington and Margaret Cousins launched the feminist newspaper The Irish Citizen which carried the motto – ‘For Men and Women Equally The Rights of Citizenship; For Men and Women Equally The Duties of Citizenship’.  CO edited with James H. Cousins. Other contributors included Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington, the cartoonist Ernest Kavanagh, Margaret Connery, Marion Duggan, Marie Johnson, Cissie Cahalan, Louie Bennett, Elizabeth McCracken (LAM Priestley) and Mary Bourke-Dowling and Lillian Metge. The paper ceased publication in 1920.

During the newspapers inaugural year the paper was released on the first of each month but subsequent year's the newspaper was released every Saturday.
