On the 17th September 1964 the News Letter first announced that Northern Ireland would have its own Sunday newspaper; The Sunday News. Set for release early 1965. The announcement commented 'The Sunday News will be a vigorous and truly independent publication for all the people of Northern Ireland' 'The project represents the biggest and the most enterprising publishing development of the century in Northern Ireland’. The Newsletter also proudly boosted the initial print of the Sunday News will be a quarter of a million copies. This was far in excess of the circulation of any other newspaper in the Northern Ireland.
The first editor of the Sunday News was true newspaper man; Mr Brian Munn born 1919. Mr. Munn joined the Daily Express in Belfast 1936. At the outbreak of the war, he enlisted with the local 8th (Belfast) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment R.A. and served in France just before Dunkirk and in England before sent to the Far East - mainly India and Burma. After the war Mr Munn returned to the Daily Express and later becoming the sub-editor of the Newsletter. Mr Munn had a long successful career in print media and moved from the Newsletter to the Belfast Telegraph where he spent 10 years before returning once again to the Newsletter.
