The Southern Star is a weekly regional newspaper based in Skibbereen, County Cork and was established in 1889 as the Cork County Southern Star, by brothers Florence and John O'Sullivan. The Southern Star is available through the Irish Newspaper Archives from 1892 – current. The masthead changed from April 1918 and the paper was published with its Irish title, Réalt a' Deiscirt. The Irish title was printed alongside the English title for 92 years until it’s removal in September 2010.
The Southern Star bought The Skibbereen Eagle 1929. The Skibbereen Eagle founded in 1857 was a rival newspaper of the Star made famous for its editorial piece on the Czar of Russia’s expansionist plans in China. One of the early editors of The Southern Star was D. D. Sheehan, and the paper included amongst its shareholders General Michael Collins.
It was privately owned by the O'Regan family, who reside in Skibbereen. Liam O'Regan edited the paper from 1958 until his death in January 2009.
