Letter to the Press by Madame Maud Gonne, Dated November 12,1923
This has been no ordinary hunger-strike. In the first days, when the suffering of hunger-strike is perhaps the greatest, they were constantly harried by their jailers. Many were actually beaten and knocked about. They were driven, without reason, in and out of the cells or huts; left hours, sometimes days exposed to bitter cold in the exercise rings, and when too weak to stand were left to lie on the wet, sodden ground.
